UN cites alarming food insecurity in eastern DRC and reports anthrax cases in North Kivu

United Nations spokesperson Steph said humanitarian partners report a severe deterioration in food security across eastern provinces of the Democratic Republic of the Congo. Citing an updated Integrated Food Security Phase Classification (IPC) analysis for March, she said more than 10.3 million people in North Kivu, South Kivu, Ituri and Tanganyika are experiencing acute food insecurity in phases 3 and 4.
Steph said local authorities report population displacement in South Kivu territories including Uvira, Walungu and Kalehe; she said two civilians were killed on April 29 in Uvira territory and that more than 40,000 people have fled affected areas. She described the overall security situation in parts of eastern DRC as volatile.
On public health, Steph said the World Health Organization and national authorities are working to respond to an anthrax situation in North Kivu, where 16 suspected and one confirmed human case have been reported. She said WHO is collaborating with local health authorities to intensify emergency response efforts.
The UN spokesperson framed these as urgent operational concerns for humanitarian and health actors; no new large-scale funding or new emergency declaration was announced during the briefing.
