Residents urge greater procurement transparency and press county to move on shelter plans

Several members of the public used the Government Services meeting’s public-comment period to raise two recurring concerns: access to procurement documents and the county’s response to housing instability.

One commenter, speaking during public comment, criticized the county’s procurement disclosure and navigation, saying RFPs and contract modifications are difficult to find online. "You don't have to make a decision. They're available to the public at any time," the commenter said, and urged the county to make issuing documents and contract changes easier to access.

Another commenter addressed recent debate over a proposed shelter and described local volunteer efforts to keep neighbors fed and housed. The speaker said their organization delivers food to about "750 people a week" and asked the county to extend supports so people could be stabilized in housing, obtain jobs and avoid homelessness. The commenter also said people facing housing instability are more likely to be victims than perpetrators of crime, arguing the county should proceed with shelter planning.

Committee leadership invited the public to continue the conversation at next week’s Health and Human Services meeting, noting the shelter matter will be on that agenda. No formal action or vote on shelter policy occurred in this session; one committee member said the chair would accept comments on that subject at the afternoon meeting or at the appropriate committee hearing.

The procurement and shelter comments were recorded as public input; committee members did not propose changes to county procurement posting practices during the meeting.
