County clerk reports surge in Real ID and enhanced license appointments ahead of May 7 deadline

Sullivan County’s clerk/DMV staff told the Government Services Committee the office has handled thousands of appointments for Real ID and enhanced licenses ahead of a cited May 7 deadline for federal identification requirements.
"We've had 3,752 appointments," the county clerk said, adding that the figure did not include walk-ins, phone calls and emails. Of those, the clerk said, "we've had 1,330 appointments for just the real and enhanced." The clerk described the appointment system as working well and said staff were "slamming busy."
The county clerk clarified which documents travelers need for domestic flights, saying a passport also works for air travel and that an enhanced license allows land and sea crossings to Canada, Mexico and some cruise terminals. "If you're not flying you don't need the enhanced or real ID," the clerk said, adding that the enhanced license requires additional documentation.
Clerk staff said the office would continue processing Real ID and enhanced licenses after May 7 and that bookings were full into June. Committee members and other officials complimented DMV staff for handling large volumes of customers.
No policy changes or votes on DMV services were taken at the meeting; the remarks were informational.
