Wake County Schools staff told the Policy Committee they will remove a section of the district's Remote Instruction (RNP) procedure that limited administrators' use of remote instructional days to situations where banked and teacher work days were exhausted and only then required options such as extending the school year or adding Saturday school.
Staff explained the change would strike that restriction so the district would not be self-limited in an emergency and could use remote instruction options as authorized by law or regulation. The committee discussed making the change and asked for clarity about how the available banked days and potential converted teacher workdays are presented on the calendar so families would know which days could be converted if needed.
No formal board action was required: staff said RNP is an operational procedure and they will make the edit, apply a revised date, and upload the updated procedure to the policy manual. Committee members requested staff confirm special-education implications and to note any year-round calendar differences when listing convertible days.
"RNP is a staff recommendation, and how staff carries out the policy," a staff presenter said. "If there are none [changes requested], we will, at the close of this meeting, make this change, strike that, and then put a revised date of today on it and upload it to our policy manual and the RNP is revised. It requires no official board action."
