Sedgwick County reviews design, procurement steps for EMS Post 1 at 13th Street and Sheridan

Sedgwick County commissioners and staff discussed design and procurement steps for a new EMS Post 1 at Thirteenth Street and Sheridan during an April agenda review, including a land purchase and a request for proposals for architectural services.
County staff said the land for the post has already been purchased and described the next procurement step as a design RFP that is listed on the county's bid board. "We have purchased the land for that post, and now we're getting into the to the design. So what we put out was an RFP 4 design, and that's what's on bid board," said Tanya, a county project services staff member.
The county’s EMS chief said the plan calls for two ambulance bays and an additional, smaller bay intended for a district chief vehicle. "That is correct. 2 bays for ambulances. As we expand, we wanted a, 2 bays, 1 for at least a full time ambulance... and then as we expand another, if there's room, we don't know until we get into design phase if there's room for another, smaller garage for 1 of our district chief vehicles to house 1 of our district chiefs at that facility too," the chief said.
Staff said the design will follow a cost-savings model used for a recently built post on Webb Road near Jabara: a mostly prefabricated metal building rather than full brick-and-mortar construction. Tanya said commissioners will be offered briefings and the county can show schematic designs when they are available. "We're happy to come around and show you kind of what the schematic design is," she said.
Commissioners and staff discussed functional details: two bays intended for ambulances, one smaller bay sized for a district chief vehicle, and a second office so a district chief has private workspace. Staff further explained that the county moved EMS operations from a previous Riverside Hospital location because of utility problems and has been operating out of Stillwell in the interim.
Next steps described by staff include completing schematic design under the RFP, then drawing construction bids for the build. Staff said they will schedule on-site visits and more detailed briefings with commissioners as designs advance.
Votes or motions were not recorded during the agenda review; the design RFP was listed as an item on the county's bid board for upcoming consideration.
