Jay Williams sworn in as Saint Paul director of council operations after unanimous council praise

The Saint Paul City Council on April 23 voted to appoint Jay Williams as director of council operations and administered the oath of office, formalizing the promotion of the interim director.

The resolution to appoint Williams passed 6 in favor, 1 opposed. After the vote Williams, joined onstage by family, recited the oath of office for the city and said he was honored to serve. “I know in this role, you know, we don't — I won't always have the right answers. We don't always have the right answers, but I promise to listen and ask good questions,” Williams told the council after taking the oath.

Council members took turns thanking Williams for service while he served as interim and for his work previously as chief budget officer. “Your leadership has just shined in multiple ways,” Council Member Johnson said. Council Member Yang praised his “wealth of knowledge” and said Williams brings harmony and respect to the workplace. Multiple councilmembers highlighted Williams’s mentorship to new members and his work during a busy budget season.
