Plan commission approves Rolling Prairie Conservancy dog-park sign; staff to seek Park & Rec input on design

The Portage City Plan Commission approved a sign permit for the Rolling Prairie Conservancy and Dog Park to be placed at the north side of Gunnerson Drive.
Staff described the permit as submitted by the Gums development team and said "the sign is 32 inches high by 8 by 8 feet wide" and that it will be a metal panel mounted on aluminum posts five feet high at the entrance to the conservancy. Staff recommended approval of the permit and the commission voted to approve it.
Commissioners raised that park signage typically is reviewed by the Park and Recreation Committee for design and placement even when the sign is adjacent to park property. Staff agreed to relay that to Toby McGuire and commissioners said the Park and Rec Committee — meeting May 12 — could be asked to review design details; a commissioner clarified that this body had approved the location and size but not necessarily the color or final design. Staff noted the sign sits in the right-of-way, which means the commission must approve placement.
The motion to approve the sign permit carried on a roll-call vote: Feeney, aye; Paul, aye; Egan, aye; Schneider, aye; Syllick, aye.
