Sustainability Commission hopefuls cite professional design, planning and transportation experience

Two applicants addressed the council on April 14 seeking seats on the Sustainability Commission and described professional experience the candidates said would help Eugene meet its climate goals.
Jan Filinger, a licensed architect who said he has practiced for 40 years and authored work on sustainable design, described experience building energy-efficient multifamily housing and noted the city’s Climate Recovery Ordinance and the 2020 Climate Action Plan as drivers for continued work. Vanitha (Vinita) Murthy, who also applied to the Human Rights Commission, described dual master’s degrees in city and regional planning and public administration and said her transportation-planning work and commuting experience inform an interest in multimodal, equitable transportation solutions.
The council did not make appointments at the session. Both candidates framed their remarks around implementation of existing city climate goals and an emphasis on equity in sustainability planning.
