Town schedules May steering meeting and community open house for comprehensive plan update

Town planning staff briefed the Board of Aldermen on next steps for the comprehensive-plan update at the April 30 meeting.
Staff said the steering committee and planning board will hold a joint special meeting with the Board of Aldermen at 5 p.m. on May 12 in the council chambers; the consultant team (Tesco Associates and Freese and Nichols) will present findings from permit and development data and introduce the public-engagement plan. The formal planning-board meeting will follow at 6:30 p.m.
The first public open house is scheduled for May 13 from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Paul J. Ciener Botanical Garden; staff said the event will be drop-in style with stations, activities for children and a poster exercise asking attendees to note their vision for the town. Staff also said the plan's survey will go live on the project website (plankernersville.com) and that staff will host a booth at the SpringFolly event to distribute flyers and collect public input.
Town staff asked the mayor to call the May 12 meeting and said notices will be published; no vote on the plan was taken at the April 30 meeting. Staff characterized the process as informational and emphasized the consultants will be synthesizing permit data and other development statistics to inform the plan update.
