Senior Services reports increased demand in Kernersville, requests same town funding for Meals on Wheels

Mark Batten, vice president of development at Senior Services, presented program results and a funding request to the Kernersville Board of Aldermen on April 30.
Batten told the board Senior Services operates with an annual budget of about $9.2 million and serves older adults (age 60+) across Forsyth County. He said last year the agency served 2,411 older adults countywide; 289 had Kernersville addresses. Of those Kernersville residents, 184 received Meals on Wheels, 32 attended the local senior-lunch site, 29 received home care services, 23 received case management, and 21 attended the Williams Adult Day Center.
Batten said the town's $16,500 contribution in the prior year supported eight hot-meal delivery routes in Kernersville and those routes are part of a countywide Meals on Wheels program. He reported key program outcomes: 96% of survey respondents said Meals on Wheels helped them eat healthier and feel better; 98% said it helps them continue to live at home. He also reported that the agency's waiting list for services across all programs is approaching 500 people and that 27 Kernersville residents are currently awaiting hot-meal delivery.
Batten asked the board to keep the town's contribution level for fiscal year 2025–26 at $16,500 to sustain the eight Kernersville hot-delivery routes. He also described Senior Services' other programs, including a recently opened intergenerational "generation center" offering arts and wellness programs and the Williams Adult Day Center, which the presenter said was named the best adult day center in America by the National Adult Day Services Association.
No formal vote on the funding request was recorded at the meeting; Batten provided printed copies of an "aging outlook and service report" and invited board members to tour Senior Services facilities.
