School board approves retaining-wall change order at Warrenton, hears construction schedule updates

The Vicksburg Warren School District board approved a construction change order that adds a retaining wall at Warrenton and concrete work at Redwood, and received updates saying the district’s multipurpose building projects remain on schedule and on budget.
The board voted to approve the change order after project staff described unforeseen soil conditions at Warrenton that required a redesigned retaining solution. The change order includes a credit of $4,000 for modified curb and sidewalk work and adds concrete work around the Redwood building; the work will be funded from the project contingency, which staff said has about $165,000 remaining.
Troy Stokes, with M and P, told the board the soil between the existing school building and the new footprint was looser and sandier than expected once contractors excavated the footprint. “When they got the footprint of the building laid out and the height difference between the existing building and where this one's going, he was able to see that 1 enough slope,” Stokes said, explaining that the revised plan uses a reinforced sidewalk/curb with perforated drain pipe tied to new storm drains to prevent dirt and mud from flowing onto the walkways.
Project staff said the concrete at Redwood is to replace two narrow strips of grass adjacent to the building. “Mr. Wooten proposed putting concrete there instead of leaving those two small strips,” staff said during the discussion.
Mister Green (project staff) told the board the multipurpose facilities are moving along “very well” and remain on budget; the sequence is Warrenton, then South Park, then Redwood and Bovina on roughly the same timeline. The board was given a target completion around July–August, with most work expected to be done by the opening of the next school year; Warrenton and South Park are expected to be ready earliest while work at Bovina and Redwood may continue close to the start of school.
The board also heard that auditorium renovation work at Vicksburg High School, Warren Central High School and Vicksburg Junior High is in closeout and punch-list phases. RCEC (River City Early College) renovations were reported to be on schedule and slightly ahead of schedule. By contrast, Vicksburg High School locker-room and ROTC work were reported behind schedule; the contractor provided a revised timeline and said about three more weeks are needed to reach punch-list phase.
Board members asked about the potential effect of tariffs and material-cost increases on projects. Project staff said most major materials for the buildings have already been purchased and are on site, and that the projects should not be materially affected unless unforeseen issues arise.
The change order was approved in a voice vote. The board was told the retaining-wall/sidewalk work is intended to address the slope between the buildings and prevent runoff and soil movement near the new building.
The board requested a further update when it next meets.
