Clovis aviation board reopens FBO naming options, defers final choice to July meeting

The Clovis Civil Aviation Board discussed several proposed names for the airport's fixed-base operator (FBO) and agreed to postpone a final selection until its next meeting, board members said.

Board members and airport staff revisited name options introduced at an earlier meeting — including High Plains Aviation, Tumbleweed Aviation and variants using the “Endless Horizons” tagline — and discussed branding considerations tied to the new terminal and marketing the redeveloped facility as the FBO.

The discussion mattered because the city plans to market the redeveloped space after the new terminal opens. Airport Director Christopher Marshall told the board the intention is to rebrand the existing terminal as the FBO so signage and marketing can be prepared before the facility opens. Several members said they preferred a name that explicitly signals aviation (for example, ending in “Aviation”) to make the facility immediately recognizable to pilots.

Board members raised practical concerns such as sign length and potential local name conflicts. Members noted that “Horizon Air” is already in use by a commercial airline and that the city’s behavioral-health project uses “Horizons,” which could cause overlapping local signage if not considered during trademarking or branding.

No formal motion or vote was taken. The board agreed to keep names under consideration, to share additional suggestions by email, and to bring a single naming recommendation to the board at its next meeting. Chairperson Leslie confirmed the board would make a final selection at that meeting.

The discussion took place during the board’s unfinished-business agenda item on naming the FBO; board members asked staff to circulate a compiled list of previously suggested names and to accept additional proposals by email ahead of the next meeting.
