Board hears curriculum committee report; AP African American Studies proposed for fall with board preapproval planned

The district’s curriculum review committee reported on its spring work and administration described plans for several course approvals and one new Advanced Placement course.
Dr. Brandy Gump, director of curriculum and instruction, told the board the committee’s review of elementary and high school materials was “very complimentary,” and that eight courses reviewed by the committee would return to the board for approval as soon as next month. The committee’s feedback, she said, is being used to refine course scope and materials.
Administration also described a proposal to offer AP African American Studies. The district said about 60 students have already expressed early interest; the proposed teacher and the curriculum team plan to adapt the College Board course framework to the district’s “Grain Valley” curriculum framework and return a localized, preapproved course to the board this summer before instruction begins. Superintendent Dr. Welly said the AP course had a controversial history when it was a pilot but that the College Board has revised the program and the district intends to personalize the curriculum for local implementation.
Board members asked about community review and committee membership; administrators said community members served on review teams and that the district will continue outreach as the AP proposal moves forward. No formal approvals were made at the meeting; administration said remaining courses and the AP proposal will appear on upcoming agendas for formal board action.
