Neighborhood nonprofit reports Strong Homes loans helped hundreds remain in Milwaukee homes

Benjamin Sanchez, housing programs director with the Neighborhood Improvement Development Corporation (NIDC), briefed the committee on the Strong Homes loan program — a city-backed product that provides emergency and essential-repair loans to owner-occupant homeowners unable to access traditional lenders.
Sanchez said the program has operated about 10 years and has helped “over 725” families remain in their homes, with total program investments of about $11.5 million. He told the committee that as of 2025 the program had approved 21 loans for the year, representing approximately $447,000 in assistance, and that 85 applications were in process.
Sanchez said staff will continue outreach via housing resource fairs to maintain application flow and ensure nonprofit partners can process demand.
The committee had no further questions; no action was taken.
