Superintendent outlines construction progress at Brandon Valley schools and next academic calendar dates

Superintendent Jared Larson updated the Brandon Valley School District 49-2 Board of Education on construction progress at the district and on the district calendar for the coming school year.
Larson said exterior masonry and foundations for the Brandon Valley Elementary School project are complete and interior foundation and utility work are underway. He said Visions Construction received the middle-school bid and that construction activity on the Brandon Valley Middle School project would continue through the 2025–26 school year, with an anticipated completion in fall 2026.
Larson described early impacts to the middle school site: construction fencing will be installed along sidewalks, staging areas and construction trailers will be placed on the east side of the building, and two classroom additions will be constructed on the east side (five classrooms in the southeast corner and five in the northeast corner). Work on a locker-room expansion and a multipurpose/wrestling room was slated for the northeast corner; a transformer in the northwest corner will be moved and updated, which Larson said will require a planned power outage anticipated to last approximately one day sometime in June.
Larson said the kitchen expansion at the middle school will not be complete before the coming school year begins, but the kitchen will remain in operation and traffic flow will be preserved on the west side of the building. He asked staff and community members to stay out of fenced construction zones and to obey posted safety signage.
Larson also reviewed calendar and personnel milestones: graduation is scheduled for May 11 at 2 p.m.; the last day of school for students is May 22; new staff report Aug. 12; in-service days are Aug. 14, Aug. 18 and Aug. 19 (all-staff welcome-back); and the first day of school for grades 1–12 is Aug. 20, with junior kindergarten and kindergarten schedules staggered that week.
Board members asked clarifying questions about the kitchen construction and the transformer outage timeline; Larson reiterated the outage is expected to be about one day in June and that the district will notify affected staff as soon as the date is set.
No formal board action was taken on construction items during the meeting.
