Carroll County sheriff reports quarter intake of $144,789.18; office says most was room and board

The Carroll County Sheriff’s Office told the Board of Supervisors on Monday that it took in $144,789.18 in the quarter covering January through March and that most of that revenue was for room and board at the jail.

Sheriff (name not specified) said that after fees were paid “we ended up with a total of $1.43 557¢ for the quarter,” and that most of the intake came from inmate room-and-board fees. He said January was nearly a record month before activity tapered with winter weather.

The sheriff reported the jail population at about ‘30-some’ on the day of the meeting and said most inmates were from outside Carroll County. He told supervisors the office is taking applications for deputies; as of the meeting two applications had been returned and neither applicant is certified, meaning new hires would require training.

Supervisors asked about maintenance at the jail after the sheriff described recent equipment failures, including a rooftop HVAC compressor that required partial warranty coverage. The sheriff said some repairs were covered by warranty but that labor or other parts sometimes were not; in one instance a vendor agreed to take care of the bill. He also said a water softener problem has been resolved after repeated vendor visits.

The Board moved to accept the quarterly report and approved the motion by voice vote.
