Council advances budget timetable and approves $358,000 mid‑cycle allocation for sheriff vehicle replacements

Fairfield County Council on April 28 advanced the county’s budget process by approving first reading, by title only, of the fiscal year 2025 operating and capital budget and by approving a mid‑cycle allocation to the sheriff’s office for equipment and vehicles.
The council’s actions set budget work‑session dates and cleared a mid‑cycle request the sheriff’s office said was needed to replace vehicles the department deemed no longer safe or usable.
Ordinance No. 845, the ordinance to establish operating and capital budgets and levy taxes for the fiscal year beginning July 1, 2025, received first reading by title only and passed on a 6-0 vote. County staff outlined the calendar for budget work sessions and readings: a budget/capital work session Apr. 30 at 3:30 p.m.; a session with elected officials/outside agencies May 7 at 3:30 p.m.; second reading tentatively May 26; and a third reading currently scheduled for June 9. The county noted possible additional or called meetings on June 16 or June 23 if needed.
Earlier, the Administration and Finance Committee had heard a sheriff’s office request for a mid‑cycle allocation of approximately $358,000 to purchase and outfit six replacement vehicles. The committee voted 3-0 to refer the request to the full council. The full council then moved, seconded and approved the mid‑cycle allocation by a 6-0 vote.
Mr. Carpenter, reporting the committee’s discussion, said the allocation would allow the sheriff to replace vehicles the department considered no longer safe or usable.
The council also discussed the Accommodation and Hospitality Tax (ATAX) committee, which deferred two applications (from the Old English District and the Fairfield County Chamber of Commerce) to a future ATAX meeting for further consideration; the council voted to table the ATAX items 6-0.
Final budget adoption is required by state law by June 30; county staff said the schedule remains on track to meet that deadline.
