Chila Khani, who presented the case, said the home has been in her family for 30 years and that she and her husband would like to move into the house so her mother could occupy the other unit. The filing requested variances to create a two‑family dwelling and to pave part of the backyard to provide up to four parking spaces; the proposal also included two dry wells to handle runoff from the paved area.
Board members repeatedly described the lot and access as tight — one member cited a gate width of about 8 feet 6 inches — and questioned whether paved backyards and the increased density would exacerbate on‑street parking pressure. Several members said the lot felt too small for a permanent six‑bedroom, two‑unit building and indicated they were inclined to deny relief as presented. The chair told the applicant the options were to proceed to a vote or withdraw without prejudice and redesign.
After a brief recess, the applicant asked to withdraw the application. The board voted to allow the withdrawal without prejudice. The record notes the applicant may return with a redesigned project; one board member said the applicant would have to wait two years to refile under the city’s withdrawal rules.
