"We're trying to find some different avenues to brighten up the space," Megan said, describing felt panels as an alternative to paint that also provides sound dampening. She described a local vendor and said the department plans to request roughly $40,000 toward interior improvements.
On flooring, staff said earlier materials descriptions were inaccurate; the current plan is to remove existing floor finish to concrete, restain and repolish rather than replace with tile or full epoxy. The front desk request covers new cabinetry and a durable countertop; staff estimated a ballpark figure and offered to return with a formal design and quote before final budget decisions.
The largest single item on the initial quote was a building‑wide audio/PA system. Staff said an initial vendor estimate for a comprehensive system ran near $290,000. Council members questioned scope and value. One council member said the figure felt high and asked for a breakdown by component and a separate bid for the fitness/multipurpose rooms. Another council member suggested exploring directional sound options for targeted areas such as the aerobics room and said the city should check whether the existing installed system could be repaired or partially reused before replacing it.
Megan said staff had solicited one initial bid and would provide a component‑by‑component breakdown, then pursue competitive bids and an RFP if the council desires. "I think truly what we're looking at is this is probably a higher number than what we'll actually end up really needing," Megan said, adding that staff will email the detailed breakdown and return to council on May 6 for a second round of discussion.
