The Providence City Finance Committee on April 22 voted to recommend approval of MayorJustin Dushaw to the Providence Public Building Authority.
Chairwoman Helen Anthony called the meeting to order and led a short swearing-in and introduction for the nominee. Director of Finance Sarah Silberia asked Dushaw to give a brief summary of his background; Dushaw described a long career in commercial banking that began at Bank of Boston and later involved positions with Bank of America. He said he and his family moved to Providence and that he sought ways to increase citizen involvement in city boards.
Committee members described Dushawas having a strong resume and noted his volunteer experience. Councilor Taylor moved to approve the nomination; Councilor Graves seconded the motion. The committee recorded the motion as approved by voice vote and said it would forward the recommendation for formal approval at the next full City Council meeting.
The nominee told the committee he wants to improve communication and transparency between the authority and the council/finance staff. Committee members said they look forward to that engagement.
No formal changes to PBBA authority, rules, or term length were made during the committee meeting; the mayor's letter accompanying the nomination cited section 302(b) of the Providence Home Rule Charter of 1980 (and related public law language passed in 1987) as the basis for the appointment.
