Jamestown Planning Commission members on an April meeting discussed an upcoming developer forum on April 30, progress midway through a comprehensive plan update and associated zoning-code rewrite, and several community engagement events scheduled for May and June.
City staff told the commission that more than 100 people were already registered for the April 30 developer forum, which will run from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. at Wicked War and will include a downtown walking tour, a trolley tour of neighborhood infill sites and presentations by several state agencies and local partners. The staff member said Mark Geiss from the IDA will speak and that the mayor will give a welcome; Ellen Detanto was identified as speaking on behalf of EPU.
The commission was told the forum will highlight state programs, likely including upcoming Consolidated Funding Application opportunities, and local partnerships intended to position Jamestown for housing-related grant funding. City staff said one tour track will emphasize adaptive-reuse opportunities in the downtown core and another will ride a CARTs trolley to neighborhoods where the land bank has assembled about 10 parcels for possible infill development.
Commissioners also received an update on the comprehensive-plan update and simultaneous zoning-code reboot. Staff said the comprehensive plan is about halfway complete and will inform changes to the zoning code; more community engagement sessions are planned. The next community event tied to that work is Hands on Jamestown on May 17 from 8 a.m. to noon, when staff will run a South Side neighborhood walk and provide cleanup supplies for volunteers. Staff said registration is available on the city website and at Tracy Plaza the day of the event.
Staff asked planning commissioners to expect expedited work on streamlining the zoning variance process once the comprehensive plan and code changes advance, saying the goal is to create preapproved variances that make infill development easier for builders.
The discussion closed with logistical notes on the forum (lunch provided) and an encouragement for commissioners and others to RSVP if they plan to attend.
