Sioux Metro Growth Alliance to lead regional property-tax discussions; Brandon positioned among mid-range growth communities

Grace Healy, representing the Sioux Metro Growth Alliance, briefed the council on recent regional coordination and the alliance’s role in upcoming property-tax discussions with state leadership.
Healy said the alliance held a round-table with the governor’s office on proposed property-tax ideas and that Sioux Metro Growth plans to lead coordination so rapidly growing communities — including Brandon — are at the table when property-tax plans are discussed. "Sioux Metro Growth is gonna be the lead on making sure that our communities, especially the ones that were aforementioned that have really explosive growth are at the table when we sit down and talk about what the property tax plan is going forward," Healy said.
Healy provided comparative five-year growth projections mentioned in the meeting: one nearby city was described as planning for $5,000,000 over five years, Sioux Falls at $25,000,000, and Healy said Brandon would be somewhere in the middle. She said Sioux Metro Growth will convene quarterly meetings with staff and mayors and will take the lead in ensuring affected communities participate in state-level conversations about tax changes.
Why it matters: Property-tax changes at the state level can affect municipal revenues and local budgets differently across fast- and slow-growing jurisdictions. Healy said the alliance will work to make sure municipalities with fast growth have a voice in shaping any proposal.
