Booth, introduced by Smith as student body president, described Eastern as a "school of opportunity," crediting small classes, hands-on experiences and the ability to graduate debt-free in his case. Smith emphasized EMU’s role in producing teachers, nurses, cybersecurity professionals and other workers who stay in Michigan; he highlighted articulation agreements with community colleges and programs that help veterans and neurodiverse students.
Smith acknowledged that EMU has lost a small number of grants and specifically cited a recently lost NIH outreach grant that supported translator/navigator services for Asian communities; the campus was given 90 days to close that grant. Smith said EMU would provide a full list of affected grants and figures to the committee.
The presentation included a request for continued state support for infrastructure and the Michigan Achievement Scholarship.
