University of Michigan Dearborn highlights practice-based learning, transfer pathways and aid usage

University of Michigan Dearborn Chancellor Grama described Dearborn’s practice-based learning model, partnerships with community colleges and the campus’s role in regional workforce development.
Grama said Dearborn has seen enrollment growth and that 43% of the campus’s students transfer from community colleges. She described practice-based learning across disciplines and cited examples of student work providing IT consulting to local organizations and criminology students helping to solve cold cases. Grama said approximately $32 million in state appropriations comprise 18% of Dearborn’s operating budget and that 95% of that state appropriation is used for financial aid going directly to students.
Grama urged continued legislative support for state infrastructure and maintenance funding, and described dual-admission and dual-enrollment partnerships intended to smooth transfer to the Dearborn campus.
When Representative Rogers asked about federal funding freezes, Grama said Dearborn had experienced only small impacts and agreed to follow up with specific numbers through the chair.
