Taylor County administrator LaWanda told commissioners April 29 that the county has retained Renee Narloff and Associates to recruit for the county engineer/director position but had received no applications a month into the search.
LaWanda said the recruiter reported candidates are reluctant to apply because the posted pay range is below market; she suggested removing a fixed range from the job posting or indicating the salary is negotiable and commensurate with experience to widen the candidate pool. The county’s current top of range was cited in discussion as approximately $99,998; staff said market pay for an experienced county engineer is likely higher.
Commissioners asked staff to assemble salary‑range benchmarking and consider options including negotiating pay, using part‑time or contract support, or reducing workload tied to grant administration if long‑term recruitment fails. LaWanda said she will obtain recommended salary ranges from the recruiter and return with options; she also noted that contracting engineering services could become expensive on an hourly or task‑order basis.
No hiring decision was made at the workshop; staff will continue recruitment and return with proposed salary ranges and, if needed, interim staffing options.
