County staff present revised fleet policy draft; benefits section to move to handbook

Travis, a county staff member, presented a revised fleet policy to the Board of County Commissioners, describing changes intended to centralize oversight with the fleet manager and to clarify accident reporting, insurance-claim handling and take-home-vehicle rules.
Travis said the draft consolidates statutory responsibilities of the commissioners and provides fleet staff authority to recommend disposal of vehicles, oversee insurer communications for claims, and manage accident reporting. He said the benefits-related language had been removed from the policy and will be addressed in the county handbook through HR.
The draft also clarifies prohibited vehicle occupants and use cases, including a prohibition on using county vehicles to shuttle employees’ children to school. Travis said the policy will allow fleet and the fleet manager to oversee certain activities previously handled in other departments so the county can more consistently manage repairs and insurance processes.
Commissioners had no further questions. No policy adoption or formal vote was recorded during the workshop; Travis said ongoing HR and fleet coordination will continue.
