CARSON CITY — The Assembly Committee on Health and Human Services heard testimony in favor of Senate Bill 84, a measure that would strengthen requirements that batterer-intervention program curricula and participant materials be evidence-based.
Liz Ortenberger, chief executive officer of SafeNest, told the committee the bill is straightforward: it would "strengthen the batter's intervention program to ensure evidence supporting not only the curriculum but also the handouts," and she said survivors and communities deserve to know the support is evidence-based. Ortenberger framed batterer-intervention programs as often the only accessible intervention for abusive partners and said improving program quality is necessary to protect survivors.
The committee recorded no questions for Ortenberger. No members of the public offered support, opposition or neutral testimony in person or via telephone during the hearing, and the chair closed the hearing with no motions or votes recorded.
