Council member Harrity said he had worked with Brady “for 35 years” and called him “like another father to me.” Council member Dritzko said the committee had seen “what he’s done in his public career,” and Council member Young said it was “only right that we honor him.” Kelly Richards, president of the Free Library of Philadelphia, indicated she would submit written testimony for the record rather than testify in person.
The ordinance was read into the record earlier in the hearing and will be reported from the committee with a favorable recommendation. Committee members also moved to suspend the rules to permit first reading at the next City Council session.
No public testimony was offered during the committee’s public-comment period for this item, and no opposing remarks were made by committee members at the hearing.
The committee’s favorable report sends the ordinance to the full City Council for consideration. If enacted, the library’s name change would be an administrative designation of a city-owned facility and would not, by itself, change library operations or funding.
