Ishpeming council directs manager to seek state funds for fire truck and tower restoration

The Ishpeming City Council voted to direct the city manager to request state fiscal-year funding for a replacement fire truck and for restoration work on the city's historic fire tower, the council said after an emergency informational discussion about a same-day legislative budget request.

The vote followed brief public comment and a presentation by Tanner Orban, legislative director for a state representative, who told the council the request would be routed through the state general fund rather than as a competitive grant. "This isn't grants. It's out of the state budget fiscal year," Orban said, urging the council to include supporting cost estimates and an end date for spending in the application.

Council members said the short timetable forced a limited, pragmatic ask. Council President Mark (City Manager) informed the council that some cost estimates were available immediately for the tower and for an inspected truck, and that a design/RFP process could be restarted if council wanted more complete plans on file for future requests.
