A parent and program representative asked the SHARYLAND ISD Board of Trustees to reconsider recent cuts to funding and school transportation for the UTRGV TextPrep summer program.
Daisy Quintanilla, speaking on behalf of TexPrep parents and students, asked trustees to “reconsideration and reinstatement of financial assistance for district students as well as school transportation for the UTRGV TextPrep program that occurs during the summer.” She said the district had funded the program in prior years and that this year the district notified parents it would not provide school transportation and would only fund returning students, not new enrollees.
Quintanilla described program benefits presented in materials from Doctor Jesus Gonzales, TextPrep director: exposure to college life, TEA‑aligned curriculum, college and STEM preparation, leadership and academic gains. She said enrollment dropped from 88 students in 2023–24 to 36 in the current year and cautioned that removing transportation and new‑student funding could further reduce access for families who cannot provide transport.
Quintanilla asked the board to align actions with the district’s stated mission to “inspire, educate, and empower all students” and to restore support that enables students to pursue advanced STEM opportunities. She indicated Doctor Jesus Gonzales and program materials were available to trustees for further information.
No board action or vote on the program was recorded during the meeting.
