The assessment will evaluate all district properties and buildings to produce a prioritized, long‑range facilities plan the district can use to budget and schedule repairs and upgrades. Superintendent Doctor Howard told trustees the district has never had a comprehensive assessment and called the study “well worth it for many years to come.”
Board members said the assessment is intended to move the district from a reactive maintenance posture to a proactive, prioritized plan. Trustee Julio Serra urged the board to make the review recurring: “I think it should be of every 10 year program where we go back and review every single building that we have,” he said. Trustee Andrew Riddle asked what the alternative would be; the board discussed continuing the current reactive approach and its limitations.
Trustees and staff described the scope: the vendor will inspect roughly 75 district‑owned buildings covering about 1,852,277 square feet, an average cost the board discussed as roughly $10 per square foot. Trustees and the superintendent said the assessment will include structural, safety and systems reviews and will identify items that could require additional future capital outlay.
Trustees said they expect the assessment to produce a prioritized list that can be phased into multi‑year budgeting to reduce the risk of last‑minute, high‑cost repairs. After discussion the board approved the service agreement on a 7‑0 vote.
The contract award will let the district plan major capital needs — such as roofing, HVAC, or structural repairs — with external engineering and architectural input rather than responding solely to requests from campuses.
