Maumee City Council approves consent items, joins ODOT salt contract and advances Project I Am

Maumee City Council approved several routine and time-sensitive items at its meeting, including the consent calendar, participation in ODOTroad salt contracts for 2025 and a first reading on a multi-year support resolution for "Project I Am." Council later voted to enter executive session on pending litigation and compensation for a public official.

The council voted to accept petitions and communications and to place them on file, and it approved the consent calendar, which included four items discussed in prior committee. Councilmember Kirk moved to approve the consent calendar; the motion was seconded and carried. Councilmember Linebaugh recorded a dissenting vote during the consent-calendar roll call.

Councilmember Allen moved and the council seconded a first-reading resolution, numbered 009-2025, authorizing multi-year support for Project I Am; the measure passed on first reading by roll call. The council also authorized participation in ODOTroad salt contracts for 2025. Councilmember Kirk moved to suspend the rules and declare an emergency to allow immediate participation; the emergency declaration and the participation resolution were approved by roll call.

Council members used the meeting's general-comments period to highlight community events. Councilmember Fiscus read prepared remarks responding to a recall-related website and said, "My thoughts are my own," and urged civility in public discourse. Mayor McDowell and other council members thanked volunteers from a recent city cleanup and announced upcoming events including an Arbor Day tree planting at the Walcott House Complex on April 25 and a ribbon cutting for a new multi-use path on May 1.

Before adjourning the public portion of the meeting, the council moved into executive session to discuss pending litigation and to consider compensation of a public employee or official; the motion to enter executive session was moved, seconded and approved by roll call. The council indicated there would be no further public business after the executive session.

Items mentioned but not acted on in substance at the meeting included a withdrawn request for a liquor-permit transfer for Nakama Japanese Steakhouse (a transfer from an entity identified in the record as Nagoya) and a façade grant for Maumee Valley Chocolate and Candy Store, which was placed on the consent calendar and approved as part of that package.
