At the start of the Middlesex County Board of Elections meeting staff announced the promotion of Loretta Matthews to deputy clerk following the retirement of former deputy clerk Kathy Garner.
Board staff summarized administrative scheduling for the coming election cycle. The office proposed an early review of signatures and a challenge-ballot hearing before election day to avoid lengthy election-day adjudications. Staff identified May 28 as a public review date for ballots and May 29 as a commission review of challenged signatures and ballots; June 4 and the election day schedule were also discussed, with staff and commissioners agreeing to move a previously proposed 4:30 p.m. start to 4:00 p.m. on at least one review date.
A public commenter asked for an update on electoral district equalization and redistricting. Staff told the meeting that a workshop had been discussed previously and that the matter will be placed back on the calendar in August for further discussion and next steps. The commenter said he had been in contact with commissioners and that the August placement would begin a timeline of activity.
Separately, a public commenter and multiple speakers raised concerns about voter registration lists and potential duplicates across states; one commenter referenced multi-state checks and the interstate ERIC system (Electronic Registration Information Center) as a possible tool to identify duplicate registrations between New Jersey and New York.
The meeting also included the routine adoption of minutes from prior meetings by motion; the motion to adopt the minutes was moved and seconded and recorded as adopted in the transcript.
No new ordinances or binding policy changes were enacted; the meeting primarily recorded administrative updates, scheduling and public-comment items for further follow-up.
