Board approves up-to-$26.1 million design-build modification for Jenkins Middle School addition; phased occupancy planned

The Board of Education approved a contract modification on April 30 to proceed with design-build work for an academic addition and repairs at Jenkins Middle School, authorizing a not-to-exceed amount of $26,100,000 for the design and construction phase.
Director Jorgensen moved approval of contract modification C2025101103, which supplements an earlier modification the board previously approved for urgent gym and media center repairs. Staff said the earlier modification totaled $5,441,757 and that the current modification covers a larger design-build scope to add roughly 25,000 square feet for seventh- and eighth-grade classrooms and related spaces.
District staff and the design-build team described immediate repairs required to allow occupancy for parts of the building this August and the timeline for the larger addition. The modification includes deadlines for completing design work by January 2026, delivering a guaranteed maximum price, and achieving substantial completion of the new addition by May 2, 2026, with final completion by Aug. 1, 2026, to permit full school occupancy.
Staff noted the district is forming an educational committee to involve school staff and the community in reconfiguring media and other shared spaces; the committee will follow a community-engagement methodology used previously at Palmer. Officials showed construction photos of micro-piling and demolition already underway in the gym and media center, and staff said permits and early work are in place.
The board voted to approve the modification and asked staff to keep the community informed through the project webpage and planned update panels. Staff said temporary modular classrooms will be used for one year while the addition is completed and that the modular units will be removed after the first year.
