Marie Gibson, a representative of Onslow County Animal Services, said the local shelter's Empty the Shelters event runs May 1–15 and that BISSELL's sponsorship reduces fees to $70 for dogs and $20 for cats during the promotion. "Empty the Shelter is exactly what it says. It is to empty the shelter," Gibson said, describing the goal of finding permanent homes for animals in care.
Gibson said the shelter will also mark an adoption week on May 4 and will host adoption-related events at community sites such as pet-store partners and the county Facebook page. She emphasized that the shelter needs volunteers and foster homes, especially as kitten season increases intake.
Gibson described the shelter's volunteer network and long-term volunteers such as Susan Stevenson, who was recognized at a recent community awards event. She said volunteers and fosters are critical to running adoptions and community events.
