Superintendent remarks noted that the district's curriculum director has ordered solar viewing glasses for every student and staff member so families who choose to view the eclipse may do so safely. The superintendent said many neighboring districts are taking the same approach and that a calamity day would also reduce childcare burdens for staff who otherwise might need time off.
Board members queried practical details: whether outdoor practices or sporting events would be canceled on that day (the superintendent said yes), whether a half day might be preferable (members observed that a half day could complicate childcare arrangements), and whether the district could retain the day as a make-up if it were later needed for weather (members noted the district has sufficient hours in the calendar to maintain flexibility).
The superintendent said the district will bring a formal recommendation for board action closer to the date and will prepare communications and contingency plans with staff and unions in advance.
