Students, coaches and teachers honored at L'Anse Creuse meeting; band trailer funding approved

The L'Anse Creuse Public Schools Board of Education opened its April 28 meeting with recognitions for student athletes, SkillsUSA competitors, Science Olympiad qualifiers and the district’s teachers of the year.
Superintendent Keith Howell and building principals called students and staff to the front of the boardroom to acknowledge achievements including a state wrestling qualifier, SkillsUSA state competitors from the Pankow Center early childhood and criminal justice programs, and Science Olympiad teams from multiple middle and high schools that qualified for state competition.
Principals announced teacher awards: Ashley Berube was named the district’s elementary Teacher of the Year; Brian McDonald was recognized as a middle/high school teacher of the year at his building; and Gail Ashburn was honored as Macomb County’s 2025 high-school Teacher of the Year. Several teachers and school leaders spoke about classroom impacts and leadership programs, including the Renaissance leadership framework.
Students and boosters also addressed the board about the need for a safe semi-trailer to transport band equipment. Board members voted to reallocate bond-series funds to cover the trailer, a move supporters said was needed for safety and to allow the marching band to participate in out-of-state competitions.
Ending: Board members congratulated students and staff and took a short recess before returning to the meeting’s business items.
