Committee recommends approval of athletics cameras impact report; audio disabled, students given view-only access

The Somerville City Council Committee on Legislative Matters on April 29 recommended approval of a surveillance-technology impact report for cameras intended for high school athletic practices and games (item 25-0838).

The report, presented by Amara Anasike of Somerville Public Schools, says coaches will have administrative access to camera recordings while students will be provided individual accounts with view-only access to game footage. The proposal also specifies that audio recording will be disabled.

The committee heard that the initial installation is planned for the high school gymnasium, with possible later deployment at the Del Boy fields if the system proves successful. "Right now, there's no we don't have an intention to go to Dillaboy this year," said Stanley Vieira, Director of Athletics at Somerville High School, adding that Del Boy is an option if gym use is streamlined and user-friendly.

Amara Anasike, chief of staff and strategy for Somerville Public Schools, told the committee the draft impact report was updated to clarify student access and to state explicitly that audio would be disabled. Councilor Davis, presiding over the meeting, asked whether the use parameters for a potential installation at Del Boy would match the gym and was told they would be identical, including the audio restriction and coach activation controls.

The committee moved to recommend approval of the surveillance-technology impact report. There was no recorded roll-call vote accompanying the recommendation; the chair reported the motion approved.

Next steps discussed by staff included finalizing documentation required under the city’s surveillance-technology review process before any installation. Committee members asked for continuing clarity about who would trigger recordings and how footage would be retained; staff said those operational details would be addressed in follow-up materials and formal impact-report documentation if the item advances to the full council.

The committee’s recommendation sends the impact report forward for further consideration and implementation planning, with council members and school and athletic staff to refine operational details before cameras are deployed.
