"No family, school, or community should have to endure such unimaginable grief," Christine Scott, a Rancho Cucamonga city council member, told the committee in support.
In testimony, Mina, the sister of one of the students who died, described the traumatic effect on families and first responders and pointed to research showing signs and barriers can interrupt impulsive attempts. "SB 800 isn't just thoughts and prayers. It offers real, tangible tools that could have benefited Shereen and that will benefit many others," Mina said.
Committee members spoke in support. Senator Richardson offered the motion to move the bill; the roll call produced an 8–0 tally in favor with absent members left on call. The committee record shows no organized opposition present to speak during the hearing.
The bill text directs Caltrans to identify high‑risk overpasses in San Bernardino County and institute a pilot installation of deterrent measures. Supporters said the measures would protect people in crisis and help reduce trauma and risk to motorists and first responders.
