Durham proclaims Durham Library Foundation Week as foundation marks 25 years and recent gifts

Durham County commissioners on April 20 proclaimed June 5, 2025 as Durham Library Foundation Week and recognized the nonprofit’s 25 years of financial support for local libraries.
Sarah Stevens, Durham County Library development officer, and Karen Nunnally, the foundation’s new executive director, told the board the foundation has contributed millions to capital projects and programming. Stevens said that in seven years of partnership the foundation has supported more than $2 million in capital projects and that the foundation helped fund the Campaign for Main with $1.2 million for the Main Library rebuild.
Arthur Rogers, president of the foundation’s board, told commissioners the organization had recently received its largest gift and is putting funds to use with the library system.
Commissioners spoke in praise of volunteers and noted the foundation’s role in supporting humanities programs, library festivals and youth programming. Commissioners also linked the foundation’s role to broader concerns about federal funding for museums and libraries.
Why it matters: the foundation’s private funding supports library facilities, collections and programs that county budgets and federal grants may not fully cover.
The proclamation was adopted on the record and library leaders and board members attended the meeting to accept the recognition.
