Superintendent briefs board on WIAA NIL decision; curriculum materials posted for public review

Athletics and NIL: Wimmer briefed the board on recent Wisconsin Interscholastic Athletic Association (WIAA) actions. The WIAA approved name, image and likeness (NIL) opportunities for high school athletes; Wimmer said the decision "aligns Wisconsin with more than 40 other states" and that students "may now earn compensation based on their personal brand, provided the activities are not directly associated with their school team, conference, or the WIAA." The superintendent said WIAA is developing safeguards and that athletic directors will work through conferences and communicate with student-athletes, families and coaches on implementation.
Summer school and events: Wimmer reminded families that summer-school registration for 4K–7 grades should be completed through the summer school office and noted space limitations in some classes. She also publicized district events: the West Bend School District Art Show at the HUB (opening May 15) and congratulated two students who placed third at a Waukesha County Technical College automotive competition and received tool awards.
Curriculum committee public viewings: Curriculum Committee Chair Melanie Aragon reported the committee’s recommendation to post several instructional materials for public review. The materials and availability periods announced at the meeting were: - Career and Technical Education (CTE) resources aligned with Moraine Park Technical College, including new video-credit courses in accounting, computer literacy and automotive; public viewing April 28–May 11 (varied by location). - AP Precalculus: recommendation to continue with the currently piloted Mathematical AP Precalculus text. - AP American Government: staff recommended American Government: Stories of a Nation to replace a 2014 text that no longer aligns to AP requirements.
Aragon said Math (grades 6–12) and Grade 5 ELA recommendations will go forward to the full board in May and that the CTE and AP materials are available for in-person review at the district education service center and the public library during the posted windows.
Next steps: school leaders and athletic directors will unpack WIAA changes, athletic directors will coordinate with conferences and families about safeguards and allowable activities, and the curriculum materials will be available for public comment during the posted review periods before the board takes action in May.
