James Island plans CERT training and regional sandbag operation before flood season

At the April meeting, the mayor announced a local push to expand community emergency response capacity and a regional sandbag operation aimed at flood preparedness.
The mayor said several town residents and volunteers — including Mike Hammer, Keith LeDoux and Melissa Flick — have completed Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) training and that the town is encouraging more residents to become certified. The mayor said the town will pay for training for residents who want to participate.
The mayor described the county CERT course as a two‑day, intensive program covering first aid, triage, search and rescue, fire extinguisher use and other disaster skills. The mayor said the town prefers residents be trained by the county rather than through an internal program; later the town hopes to develop local trainers once more residents are certified.
On sandbagging and coordination, the mayor said the city, county, public service district and the town will meet May 21 at the fire station to coordinate a sandbag operation. The mayor said there are 20,000 sandbags and sand available and that the exercise is intended to ensure a plan is in place before high‑water events.
The mayor urged residents interested in volunteering or certification to contact the town; no formal enrollment deadlines or costs beyond the town’s offer to cover training were specified in the meeting.
