District outlines summer offerings: course recovery, Camp Minooka, enrichment and bridge programs

District staff presented an overview of Minooka CCSD 201’s summer programming, including course recovery, Camp Minooka (reading and math), summer enrichment for grades 5–8 and the Minooka Bridge online transition courses.

Course recovery is aimed at fifth through eighth graders who have not met passing criteria in a course. Camp Minooka reading and math serve current kindergarten through fourth-grade students in small groups, typically 10–15 students; staff said they try to include additional support such as aides or special education assistance when available. Summer enrichment offers about 14 elective-style classes for fifth through eighth graders; staff encouraged sign-ups for two sessions this year to increase participation. Minooka Bridge provides asynchronous online lessons plus weekly teacher office hours to help students transition to the next grade.

Staff said registration opened recently; as of the morning of the meeting 54 students were registered for enrichment with registration open through May 16 and last year’s participation was 109 students. The district is pursuing partnerships with high school students to provide volunteer help for camps and said teachers will receive stipends for instruction. Communication to families will come via building principals, district mass email, graphics and PowerSchool signups.

The board was told classes are staffed from volunteer interest among staff and that offerings vary year to year depending on teacher availability. Staff said multilingual newcomer supports will be included in the bridge offerings for grades five through eight.
