Council approves DOT plan for rumble strips on Route 101 with limits; installation tied to repaving

The Foster Town Council voted April 24 to accept a Rhode Island Department of Transportation proposal to install rumble strips on Route 101. Council members said they negotiated adjustments with DOT: the strips will be placed on the center (yellow) line only, not on the white line, and will be omitted at intersections and dedicated turn lanes.
Council members noted DOT had previously installed similar features on Route 6 and that installing rumble strips in turn lanes or on narrowed pavement could create undesirable impacts; DOT agreed to those constraints. A council member said the feature is a safety measure to wake drivers who might doze off on the road that has residential stretches.
Council members clarified the town’s limited authority over state roads but voted to accept the DOT proposal so the town’s endorsement could be conveyed to the state. DOT will schedule installation to occur in conjunction with repaving work. The council’s vote was a motion to accept the proposal as presented by Rhode Island DOT and passed by voice vote.
The council president said he would contact the DOT project manager (Steve) and follow up with the town on the installation schedule.
