The Harrisburg School Board on April 22 approved a change in venue and date for Harrisburg High School's prom, rescinding a prior agreement with the Best Western and entering into an agreement with Harrisburg Area Community College (HACC) to host the event on May 24.
Board members discussed traffic, security and community benefit when considering the move. Administration told the board HACC agreed to provide the Cooper Center venue and the district's only additional cost would be for meals; one board member expressed concern about a roughly $4,000 increase in costs but administrators clarified the district no longer pays for the venue itself.
Administrators said bringing the prom back to the city offers students a chance to visit a local postsecondary campus and keeps event spending inside Harrisburg. Miss Copeland, a board member, said she was pleased to see the prom "back locally," noting some community feedback favored a city location.
The board also discussed plans for a red carpet event and photo stops around local landmarks such as the State Capitol and Italian Lake. Administrators told the board the red carpet would run roughly from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. and the prom would begin at 7 p.m. at the Cooper Center.
The motion to rescind the earlier arrangement with the Best Western and approve the agreement with HACC carried by the board's voice approval at the meeting. Administrators said student excitement about the venue was a factor in seeking the change, and that follow-up logistics (security plans, routing for photo stops, and catering contracts) will be finalized by district staff.
