Aurora East USD 131 board approves contract renewals, site bids, student hotspots and discipline resolution

The Aurora East USD 131 Board of Education on April 21, 2025 approved a series of contracts, bids and resolutions affecting food service, facilities work and student services.

The board voted to: renew a one-year beverage contract with Coca-Cola for the 2025–26 school year; renew food service contracts with Whitsons (elementary schools and Cowherd Middle School) and Sodexo (middle schools and East High) for year 2 of the districts' RFP-based arrangements; approve the purchase of Scholastic My Book summer kits for Rollins School for $42,630.18; award site-improvement base bids to Accu Paving Company in the amount of $107,375; extend the custodial supplies contract through June 2027; approve an agreement with AT&T to provide student hotspots and related Internet services; and adopt a resolution authorizing disposal of district personal property, including a nonoperable van and East Aurora High School band items.

The board also approved a student-discipline resolution: after receiving the hearing officer’s evidence, the board upheld a recommendation for alternative placement to Core Academy in lieu of expulsion for student number 579509287 for one calendar year effective 04/22/2025 through 04/21/2026, "to include summer school 02/2025," and stated that if the student fails to attend the alternative setting an expulsion will be enacted for the remainder of the term.

Many of the routine and action items proceeded with roll-call votes recorded by the board secretary and were approved by the members present. District staff told the board that the school-meal contracts are administered under a competitive RFP process that permits annual renewals up to a five-year maximum; the district applied a 3% maximum renewal rate in the contracts and said USDA reimbursement covers breakfast, lunch, supper and snack programs. Staff also told the board the Accu Paving award reflects base bid results for site improvements and that the AT&T hotspot contract offers improved service and pricing for student devices.
