Neighbor from LaGrange warns Prospect council about proposed hyperscale data center upstream

Gaines said the project is proposed on land zoned residential and agricultural and that opponents are concerned the developer would seek rezoning to allow heavy industrial use. She warned that hyperscale data centers require substantial power and water for cooling and that the applicant had cited potential water use in the millions of gallons per day for very large facilities. Gaines said recent state legislation (Senate Bill 89) had altered protections for headwater streams, and that loss of state-level protections could leave creeks like Harris Creek vulnerable to discharges and other site impacts.
Gaines told the council the property was under contract but had not yet been purchased and said the rezoning process could take up to 180 days while local bodies review applications. She provided flyers and directed council members and residents to an Oldham County community website and a local Facebook group for ongoing updates.
Mayor Barnsley accepted the speaker’s materials and thanked Gaines for appearing. Council members did not take formal action on the matter at the meeting; the remarks were recorded as public comment to inform the council and the public.
