Prospect council approves budget amendments, schedules June 2 special meeting for proposed FY25–26 budget

The Prospect City Council approved amendments to two fiscal-year 2024–25 budgets on April 21 and set a special meeting for 7 p.m. on Monday, June 2, to present and conduct a first reading of the proposed FY2025–26 budget.

Mayor Doug Barnsley told the council he was canceling the May 19 meeting and calling a special meeting at 7 p.m. on June 2 that will include the mayor’s budget message and the first reading of the proposed 2025–26 budget. The mayor said other items scheduled for May 19 would be considered at the June 2 meeting as needed.

At the April 21 meeting the council gave second readings and approved Ordinance 6-50, which amends the municipal road aid fund budget, and Ordinance 6-51, which amends the general fund budget, each by unanimous roll call. Finance and investment committee members summarized current cash balances and reported that March is the city’s lowest-income month but that revenue and expenses remain on target for the fiscal year.

Council members discussed a proposed combined-style ordinance for the coming fiscal year that would present general fund, road-aid and capital-project items in a single document. Members noted the legal limits on how municipal road-aid funds may be spent and asked staff to ensure line-item clarity showing which expenditures are allowable from Road Aid funds.

The council will hold a special meeting at 7 p.m. on June 2 for the mayor’s budget message and the first reading of the proposed FY2025–26 budget.
