Superintendent reports two community deaths, building move, grants and graduation date

Dr. Simpson said March 24 brought "the loss of a student, Blessing Farson, and long time teacher Charlotte Mitchell." The superintendent described Mitchell as "a steady hand" whom younger teachers sought out for guidance. Dr. Simpson said staff provided memorial services and support for students and families.
Dr. Simpson also announced the death of Mike Monahan, a longtime reporter for the Guthrie News Leader, saying Monahan "will be greatly missed" for his coverage of students and athletics.
On facilities, the superintendent praised Calderon staff and Crossland Construction for moving buildings over spring break and reported the demolition of the old building had begun. He said the district completed an on-time transition with instruction continuing and described the new facility as a significant improvement.
Dr. Simpson reported the Guthrie Educational Foundation distributed 44 grants totaling more than $30,000. He said each building teacher of the year received $150 for classroom supplies and each building received an additional $1,000 from the foundation. The foundation also hosted a fundraising event, "Are You Smarter Than a Fifth Grader?" which staff described as successful.
The superintendent noted Support Staff Appreciation Day on April 4 and thanked the Guthrie Chamber of Commerce and the Education and Workforce Development Committee for organizing the event.
Dr. Simpson reminded the board that both inclement weather days had been used and confirmed graduation is scheduled for Friday, May 16 at Jelsma Stadium, beginning at 7:30 p.m.
He closed by saying he would provide the board with an updated schedule of spring events.
