Board honors 17 district retirees and thanks student representatives; student voices, poem part of ceremony

The Saline Area Schools Board of Education honored 17 district employees retiring this year and recognized two student representatives at its May 27 meeting.
Trustees and administrators invited retirees to the front of the room to receive framed copies of a poem and roses and to pose for photographs. The board noted the retiree group represents a combined 412 years of service to the district.
Cara Davis, executive director of teaching and learning, read a poem titled “A New Beginning,” written by students at the Saline High School Writing Center and used this year as a new district tradition. Davis read, “In halls where wisdom's whispers flow through every space and every row, You've sown the seeds of ideas and light, and fostered dreams to take flight,” and trustees presented framed copies to attendees.
Board members named retirees present and thanked them by role and years of service, including: Nate Bush, industrial technology teacher, 24 years; Christy Cundiff, special education teacher, 23 years; Trish Fair, special education teacher, 23 years; Mary Howley Wiesel, special-populations coordinator (SWWC), 19 years; Jeffrey Kazee, high school social studies teacher, 20 years; Steve (named in materials as district superintendent) with 28 years in district leadership; Nate Lampman, high school band director, 28 years; Sue Fan Lin, director of Pooh Corner, 19 years; Carol Melcher, principal of the alternative high school, 37 years; Kimberly Munn, speech and language clinician, 26 years; Deb Palmer, paraeducator, 3 years; and others.
The board also recognized student representatives Tommy Almond and Kate Sonnenday. The district presented each student representative with a $500 scholarship and a plaque in appreciation of their service to the board. Student representative Tommy Almond spoke briefly about the experience, saying he appreciated the chance to bring student perspectives to meetings and thanked teachers who encouraged his civic participation.
Ending: The board posted retiree slideshows and photographs to district communication channels and noted the slideshow would remain available on the district website over the summer.
